Joy has an incredible way of presenting information so that it is easy to understand and apply immediately to your business. I took an Integration Developer class with Joy and it educated me on integration best practices and most importantly the why behind the best practices. Immediately after the course I was able to show more value with my customers. Thank you.

Where did you start and where are you now in tech?
I started out as a print-based graphic designer. I dabbled in email and web design from a mockup perspective but when working with the engineers, I found that it was sometimes tough speaking their language in order to get the mockups realized through their code. I heard a lot of, “This can’t be done.” and “You are insane to think this is how code works.” After years of hearing this, I decided to go back to school and learn how to program. As a designer, it was tough to grasp the engineering language and mindset. But I pushed through the courses and it finally clicked in my head. Now i am happily entrenched in tech and programming and still design work for human computer interactions. I actually live as I design as a full-fledged, respected, talented, intuitive User Experience / User Interface Visual Designer.

What are Joy’s best qualities as a developer/teacher?
Well this one is an easy one to answer. I was very fortunate to have Joy as a teacher three times in my programming coursework. She greeted each class with a joyful welcome, big smile, and tons of energy. Her energy becomes infectious which is great if you are like me and constantly remain in your head as you force yourself to grasp the concepts. Joy is extremely patient up to a point. Like most talented teachers, she expects you to meet her halfway, if not further, because she is there to unlock the talent you may feel is trapped or out of your reach. She listens to you and responds appropriately. You can ask her anything about the coursework and she will happily answer or if she doesn’t know the answer today, she will most definitely get back to you with an answer when she finds it out.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about taking a course?
Do it! Definitely, Do it! I wouldn’t be the Sr Manager of a UX Department managing the front-end of a 2 billion dollar company’s customer portal if I had not gone through her classes. Because I was eager to learn, she was able to distill the complexities of programming down to nuggets of information I could consume. The projects she assigned were appropriate in enforcing that day’s lecture and practicums. To put it plainly, If I can do it, anyone can. I am no mathematician or software engineer, but I do know how to think in terms of the end user and can prototype, like the rest of them, because of my foundational coursework that Joy helped to build.

Something you’d like to share?
Yes, actually! My coursework took place 7 years ago. During the last 7 years, I’ve gotten to know Joy outside of the classroom. And she is the same as she is in class which is refreshing because she has a genuineness to her that is admirable. She says as she teaches and as she does. I am in full support of her and what she is embarking on with spreading the language of code to everyone who wants to learn programming but maybe thought it was too intimidating. She makes it fun. She makes it simple. She makes it playful. Three mantras that definitely worked for me.

Something you’d like to share?
I met Joy when we both worked at a solar energy company a few years back, it was at first in passing friendship because we both recognized the positive energy within each other. From the time we became friends until today, the thought of her still brings a smile to my face and it genuinely pleases me to know she’s out to help and enrich the world.

Where did you start and where are you now in tech?
My interest in tech really started while I worked at an organization that advocated for diversity in the tech field. Through hosting hackathons for middle and high school students under-represented in the field, I came to truly appreciate the transformative nature of technology. It was given this interest that I was so excited to join Joy’s class where she taught Python. I am currently thinking about my next big step – will let you know when I know!

What are Joy’s best qualities as a developer/teacher?
Its not often that you meet someone whose name exactly captures their nature, but its hard to describe Joy without using her name as an adjective! Her energy, love of the world and love of coding is infectious and will inspire you to work your hardest.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about taking a course?
I would say “Go for it!”. It is just an important time to really get into the tech world and Joy is a wonderful guide to get you there.
